History

How it all started...

“The largest city in the state - - and we have only one congregation there” was possibly the thought in the minds of the Missionary Board members of the Texas District of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States early in 1922 as they contemplated the work of the Lutheran church in San Antonio, Texas. For, San Antonio was then the largest city in the state, and the one San Antonio congregation of our Synod, St. Paul Lutheran Church, had been in existence for about nine years.

The Mission Board decided to do something about this; therefore, in July of 1922, a call was issued to the Rev. G. W. Lobeck to come to San Antonio to attempt to establish another congregation. Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church was born...

Our Pipe Organ

On Easter Sunday, April, 16, 2016, 1845 miles away from Mt. Calvary, at St. James the Less Episcopal Church, Scarsdale, New York, our Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ was played for the last time after leading the song of God’s people in that place for 71 years.

By God’s providence, it became possible for this beautiful instrument to be purchased and installed at Mt. Calvary in the year that followed. Now, this Pipe Organ will be continue leading the Church’s worship and song through the voices of His people here at Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church today, and for generations to come.
