Courage dear heart
It called out in a strong sweet voice what seemed to be words though no one understood them … But no one except Lucy knew that as it circled the mast it had whispered to her, “Courage dear heart,” and the voice, she felt sure, was Aslan’s, and with the voice a delicious smell breathed in her face. – C.S. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the fourth book in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, four youth and a talking mouse set sail on a ship heading for adventure. They believe they are following Aslan, the lion stand-in for the Lord, as they sail into the unknown. They trust his goodness and guidance, but uncertainty is up ahead. “Lucy, up in the fighting-top, had a wonderful view of the exact moment at which they entered the darkness.” (Lewis 194)
At first, the young sailors are brave, trusting in Aslan, and each other. But before long, with the darkness setting in, question arise, fears emerge, and uncertainty takes hold…
Is there darkness on your horizon? Uncertainty or unknowns in your future?
The world can be a fearful place. We know we are called to follow, and trust, and believe, but sometimes doubt takes hold.
We hear the call of our Lord: Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. -Philippians 2:14-15
As we follow God’s call, living out our salvation and serving his Kingdom, we face a challenging, difficult, and dark world. But, the reminder C.S. Lewis gives - you are not alone - as the voice of Aslan whispers over us “Courage dear heart.”
Lucy leant her head on the edge of the fighting-top and whispered, ‘Aslan, Aslan, if ever you loved us at all, send us help now.’ The darkness did not grow any less, but she began to feel a little – a very, very little – better. (Lewis 200)
Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. -Joshua 1:9
